Region of Southern Denmark




The Region of Southern Denmark has 1.2 million inhabitants and covers an area of 12.200 km2 at the Danish-German border. The most important task of the Region is to run health care in Southern Denmark. The Region of Southern Denmark also takes care of specialised tasks in the field of social affairs, in particular of handicapped children and adults. The Region also safeguards and co-ordinates development and growth in Southern Denmark. The yearly budget amounts to a total of 23.8 billion DKK (4.07 billion USD).

Since July 2007, the Region of Southern Denmark has had a Sister Agreement with the Guangdong Province in China. The co-operation focuses mainly on energy, entrepreneurship, health and tourism.

From 2007 to 2012, the Region has welcomed a number of delegations from the Guangdong Province wishing to study solutions in the fields of energy and the environment. Delegations from the Region of Southern Denmark have participated in the Guangdong Festival of Tourism and Culture each year, accompanied by group of performers from the region.  In 2012 representatives from the Region visited the Guangdong Province twice, one of which was in connection with the Guangdong International Week on Co-operation and Exchanges in which a group of performers from Southern Denmark participated as well.

The Guangdong Province and the Region of Southern Denmark have recently signed a Declaration of Intent on future co-operation. Also a Memorandum of Understanding between the University Hospital of Odense and the Guangdong People’s Provincial Hospital has been signed. The two hospitals have worked together in different fields during the last years.
