The last couple of years have seen great changes in the way businesses use digitalisation and online services. The pandemic has turbo charged the digitalisation of many Danish businesses, making online meetings, cloud computing, and (perhaps soon) AI an integrated part of our daily work life.

Join us for this event, where we will look at topics such as creating visibility towards potential Chinese customers, the need for the notorious ICP license, The Great Firewall, and other relevant aspects of the digitalisation process for Danish businesses in China.

European Business in China Post-2022 - The View from the Ground

Date: January 12, 2023

Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (CET)

Event: Supported Webinar

2022 has been a turbulent year for the EU and China. Both actors have had to deal with multiple shocks, including the war in Ukraine and the resulting energy and food security crises, economic headwinds and inflation, and an unstable geopolitical environment. In the case of China, an increasingly unsustainable zero-COVID policy and a property crisis have added to the complexities in an already politically pivotal year for the Chinese leadership, with the 20th Party Congress taking place in October. The China at the beginning of 2023 – no longer with COVID-zero and with a new leadership – is certainly very different from the China in early 2022. European companies' conversations in China now are not the same as in January 2022. Indeed, from the perspective of European companies in China, the shift in Chinese policymaking – partly as a result of these and other trends towards prioritizing ideology over the economy – has led to China's business environment becoming less predictable, reliable and efficient. Although opportunities for European companies in China remain, they must develop strategies to deal with an ever-growing list of risks stemming from geopolitical developments and emerging legislation both within and outside China.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from European business representatives operating on the ground in China what the key drivers behind these trends in China are and their implications for European business.

Programme:
10.00 - 10.30: Registration (offline attendees only)
10.30 - 10.40: Opening remarks by Ms Luisa Santos, Deputy Director General, BusinessEurope
10.40 - 11.00: Presentation of the current business environment in China by Mr Joerg Wuttke, President, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China
11.00 - 11.40: Panel discussion moderated by Mr Davide Cucino, Brussels Representative, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China with industry representatives from the European Chamber:

  • Mr Zhonghua Xu – Chair Energy Working Group – TotalEnergies
  • Mr Raphael de Garnier – Chair Pharma Working Group – Sanofi
  • Ms Susan Gao – Vice-Chair Banking and Securities Working Group – Landesbank
  • Ms Renata Pavlov – Member State Representative and member of the Maritime Manufacturing Working Group – Fincantieri

    Why Participate?

Foreign companies are more than ever required to understand the political circumstances affecting the online marketplace in China in order to leverage the various Chinese platforms and grasp the opportunities they hold when it comes to getting in touch with Chinese consumers. Join this DCBF Signature Event to gain insights on how to navigate the increasingly regulated Chinese digital landscape and learn from case stories of successful brands on the Chinese online marketplace.

    About the event

The Chinese digital landscape has developed independently from the rest of the world during the past 10 years. With its own social media-, livestreaming- and e-commerce platforms, as well as a myriad of apps and other digital tools, the Chinese online marketplace has always been a hard nut to crack. The almost complete closure of the Chinese borders has made a successful entry even harder. Furthermore, the internet and the Chinese tech giants have been under political pressure from the party and the Chinese authorities, and therefore foreign companies are required to pay attention to the political circumstances affecting the online marketplace. Nonetheless, the online ecosystem in China holds big opportunities for Danish companies.

At this DCBF Signature Event, Casper Wichmann from ThinkChina University of Copenhagen’s China-focused think tank, will talk about the possibilities the Chinese digital landscape holds regarding the Chinese consumer journey, and what to be aware of when navigating the Chinese digital market. Afterwards Niels Christian Flintholm from the China focused branding and marketing agency Leaf Digital will share his insights on how Scandinavian brands can leverage the unique Chinese online ecosystem to make successful inroads in the market. The presentation will mainly be based on Leaf Digital´s own successful cases from the Chinese market.
