Geopolitics - the value of integrating local prespectives

The discussion will explore how China-based teams can contribute beyond strategy implementation by providing valuable insights into China’s geopolitical, regulatory and business environment, and how these perspectives can be effectively integrated into HQ’s strategic decision-making.
The programme includes a presentation by Klara Christensen, Director of Public Affairs, Danfoss A/S, followed by Catharina Sørensen, Director of Government and Public Affairs, The LEGO Group, who will supplement the discussion with her own experiences and reflections.
The aim is to facilitate a candid exchange on what works in practice:
How to unlock the strategic value of local expertise, strengthen dialogue between headquarters and China, and build organizational structures that allow companies to respond effectively to an increasingly complex geopolitical and regulatory environment.

China’s five-year plans have played a central role in the country’s emergence as the world’s second-largest economy and a strategic competitor to the United States. China also holds a leading position in 66 of the 74 critical technology fields assessed by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. The 15th Five-Year Plan, covering 2026–2030, is expected to accelerate China’s drive for self-reliance in critical technologies and strategic sectors while sustaining its export ambitions. Priority areas include new energy, advanced materials, humanoid robotics, biotechnology, aerospace and quantum technology. These priorities are likely to strengthen Chinese companies in both established and emerging industries, intensifying competition in China and across global markets.
Denmark’s strategic strengths overlap significantly with sectors prioritised by Chinese policymakers and pursued by both private and state-owned enterprises. This convergence is already evident in wind energy, with similar dynamics emerging in life sciences and the maritime supply chain.
Boards should assess the 15th Five-Year Plan through both a risk and an opportunity lens. Its implications will extend beyond China to the United States, the European Union and markets across the Global South. China-related decisions should therefore be tested against their potential consequences in other jurisdictions, particularly for companies with substantial exposure to both the US and Chinese markets.
Our speakers will examine China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and assess the strategic choices available to European companies. The discussion will identify the questions boards should ask about China’s potential impact on competitive positioning, operations, supply chains, technology dependencies, investment decisions and long-term corporate strategy.

Overview of the Recent IP-Related Legal Developments in China

On October 17th 2020, the National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the Patent Law amendment, which entered into force on 1st of June 2021. The key provisions of the new law include an increase in statutory damages, patent term restoration and a mechanism for early resolution of patent disputes in the pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore, the new law extends the design patent term from 10 to 15 years.
On November 11th 2020, the National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the Copyright Law amendment, which entered into force on 1st of June 2021. The new copyright law expands the works protectable by copyright to adapt to the newest technological developments. It also increases statutory damages, authorises technological protection measures, reinforces the investigative powers of copyright authorities and shifts the burden of proof in infringement cases in favour of the right holder. During this online training, the Helpdesk provides an overview of these recent changes and explains what impact these changes can have for the SMEs. The online training will include a Q&A session at the end of the event allowing attendees to pose questions to the speaker.

From a commercial point of view, it is usually easy to decide how to handle the big IP cases, where a lot is at stake, and likewise for the little cases. But what about the “medium” cases, where the immediate financial risk might be low but where the negative long-term market signal for doing nothing might be high? This seminar attempts to offer a conceptual framework from a commercial perspective for solving such cases. The seminar will be illustrated with a case in point whose solution involved enforcement, or threatened enforcement, in China for the purpose of solving a commercial problem in the USA. Thus, the seminar will anchor its conceptual framework with a series of practical, low-cost, real-world actions.
Thomas is senior IP Strategist at AWA AB in Sweden. He holds several degrees, and he is in the final stages of completing his PhD in industrial management and economics. All his research has been focused on intellectual property.
