On 23 September, the EU SME Centre is organising a new webinar on market entry with the Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCECC) to provide guidance to small and medium-sized businesses interested in exporting to and expanding their operations in the Chinese market.

The event will cover major regulatory requirements to enter the Chinese market and outline the main commercial channels available, from e-commerce platforms to brick-and-mortar retail, assessing their respective advantages and limitations. It will also advise SMEs on how to conduct commercial background checks and negotiate strong contracts.

The Danish Board Leadership Society and the Danish-Chinese Business Forum invite board members and senior executives to a strategic discussion of how China’s next Five-Year Plan may reshape competitive conditions, technology leadership and market access. China’s five-year plans have played a central role in the country’s emergence as the world’s second-largest economy and a strategic competitor to the United States. China also holds a leading position in 66 of the 74 critical technology fields assessed by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. The 15th Five-Year Plan, covering 2026–2030, is expected to accelerate China’s drive for self-reliance in critical technologies and strategic sectors while sustaining its export ambitions. Priority areas include new energy, advanced materials, humanoid robotics, biotechnology, aerospace and quantum technology. These priorities are likely to strengthen Chinese companies in both established and emerging industries, intensifying competition in China and across global markets. 

Denmark’s strategic strengths overlap significantly with sectors prioritised by Chinese policymakers and pursued by both private and state-owned enterprises. This convergence is already evident in wind energy, with similar dynamics emerging in life sciences and the maritime supply chain. 
 
Boards should assess the 15th Five-Year Plan through both a risk and an opportunity lens. Its implications will extend beyond China to the United States, the European Union and markets across the Global South. China-related decisions should therefore be tested against their potential consequences in other jurisdictions, particularly for companies with substantial exposure to both the US and Chinese markets. 

Our speakers will examine China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and assess the strategic choices available to European companies. The discussion will identify the questions boards should ask about China’s potential impact on competitive positioning, operations, supply chains, technology dependencies, investment decisions and long-term corporate strategy.

The Danish-Chinese Business Forum (DCBF), in partnership with TAJCO, is pleased to host a Focus Group Meeting with Jens Alsbirk, Consul General of Denmark in Shanghai. 

Against a backdrop of evolving trade policies and a changing global business environment, the meeting will focus on the challenges and opportunities facing Danish companies in China. Drawing on his experience from Shanghai and the surrounding provinces, Jens Alsbirk will share insights into regional economic developments, the business climate, and other issues of relevance to Danish companies active in the Chinese market. The session will also provide an opportunity for participants to exchange views and discuss current developments directly with the Consul General. 

The meeting is kindly hosted by TAJCO at its headquarters in Vejle, and the session will be held under the Chatham House Rule.

Understanding how to recruit the right people, manage a team and terminate contracts is as crucial in China as it is anywhere else. This knowledge is key not only because of the peculiarities of China’s human resources and labour regulations, but also, in the case of European SMEs with operations in China, because of the distance between headquarters and the local team.

On 14 October, the EU SME Centre and European Union Chamber of Commerce in China are organising a workshop in Beijing and online to share information on HR best practices with experts.
